The Latest News from the Golf Club

As we bid farewell to a rainy May it looks like summer may now have officially arrived! There’s lots to look forward to at the club over the next few weeks, as we embark on a spectacular Summer of Sport which started with Euro 2020 on 11th June.

It’s been wonderful to have welcomed so many of our members back to the Club recently, bringing the energy we’ve all missed so much.

The demand for F&B staff following the relaxing of restrictions has greatly impacted our food and drinks suppliers, both of which are the largest in the country. Please be assured we are doing everything we can to reduce any negative impacts on your visit - however at certain times we may have to offer a reduced menu or kitchen opening times. Unfortunately due to when we receive information from our suppliers we may be unable to give as much advance notice of this as we'd like. We're currently setting up accounts with alternative suppliers to help reduce this impact, and hope to be able to return to normal service shortly. Thanks for your understanding.

Clubhouse improvements

I’m hopeful that by the time you read this newsletter we will have taken delivery of some additional new outdoor furniture, including the much-requested parasols! The new smaller sized tables will enable us to comfortably seat another twenty members, whilst still adhering to social distancing guidelines. The investment doesn’t stop there - you’ll be delighted to hear that our lounge, spikes bar and Pro Shop carpets are to be replaced within the next month. To complement our swanky new carpets and to enhance the décor of the clubhouse, there has also been some stunning new artwork commissioned!

Welcome to ‘Team Cams’

Introducing Clare and Rachelle to our Food and Beverage team! Both ladies have a wealth of front of house experience; they have settled in very quickly and are already proving to be valued members of our close-knit team. Rachelle, who only recently moved into the area, previously worked at Stevenage Golf Centre, so don’t be surprised if you occasionally see her in the Pro Shop too!

Busy mum of four Clare is currently a 2nd year student studying for a degree in social work – hence, she will generally only be working weekends. I trust over the coming weeks you will join me in extending a very warm welcome to them both!

Member of the Month

This month we've awarded this title to Ron Gordon for a phenomenal run of three victories in a row in the Monday Senior’s competitions! Ron was out of the game for a period last year but has come back in great form with some tweaks in his technique and has duly been richly rewarded. Well done Ron - only eight more to go to match Byron Nelson's PGA Tour record of 11!

Go Zach!

Huge congratulations to one of our youngest members Zach Wheeler. Zach, who only recently turned ten, has been asked to join the Hampshire Under 14s’ Team. Zach has been playing golf at Cams since the age of three and I’m sure many of you will have admired his natural talent whilst seeing him practise. He currently has a playing handicap index of 12.4, and his long-term dream is to become a professional golfer.

Park Course Competitions

As a reminder, these are open to ALL membership categories (not just Park). Check the Competitions > Upcoming menu on the website for details. We hold a Park stableford every week (midweek one week, weekend the next) and will be varying the day of the midweek event to appeal to a broader range of players. We'll also be incorporating these events into a 6-month (June - Nov) Order of Merit, where players can accumulate points based on their finishing position in each event!

Course Report

The warmer weather finally arrived, and we’re really starting to see some definition out on the course. The striped fairways really enhance the look of the Creek course, and we are now seeing the greens perform as they should. We are currently cutting them down to 3mm and they are stimping at just over 9.5ft for daily play. The approaches have come on leaps and bounds in comparison to last year and thankfully now have very good grass coverage.

We have started to top up some of the greenside bunkers with china clay sand, and this has made a notable improvement to those already completed (holes one and two of the Creek course). The sand may have a slightly grey appearance to start with, but this soon disappears over time leaving a whiter looking sand. This is an ongoing project that will be addressed alongside our routine maintenance cutting programs.

In addition to focusing on weed spraying both courses over the next couple of weeks, myself and the team will be dedicating resources to complete a few of the tasks that members have recently highlighted. This will include trimming back the bushes around the 15th pond.

I would like to thank the membership for their understanding and patience during what has been a challenging year leading up to this golfing season; an extremely cold spring and a plague of leatherjackets has made it one of the slowest starts to the year I have ever known. Please be assured that over the coming months I will be devising a structured plan to ensure we are prepared for future infestations!

Happy golfing!

Pro Shop news

We are hosting our next Callaway Demo & Fitting Day on Tuesday 6th July, 12pm - 4pm. If you are interested in booking a 30-minute slot for a personalised fitting, please contact a member of the Pro Shop team.

Coaching & Fitting is the best combination for the greatest improvement! Take a look at Andy here, who experienced fantastic gains as a result of Coaching & a Fitting session. The PING G425 iron gave him an additional 6mph ball speed off the clubface over his original set, with no extra effort required in the swing.

Combined with a better technique which was worked on in a coaching session, saw Andy lose his slice spin and gain 27 yards with his new 7 iron!

We're hosting our own fitting appointments with our own Demo & Fitting equipment that we have from PING, Callaway & Yonex. Sessions are bookable (marked "Custom Fit") via Sam's online diary. Please note that the fitting fee is refunded from any subsequent purchase.

Win a Limited Edition Titleist Tour Bag! Purchase a dozen Titleist balls during June and be entered into our prize draw for a stunning limited edition Titleist Cart Bag!

  • 200g cooked spaghetti
  • Salt & Pepper
  • 60g butter
  • Little veg oil

Method

  1. In a large frying pan or wok, heat a little oil and fry the diced chorizo, after one minute add the prawns, garlic and butter.
  2. Sauté for two or three minutes until the prawns are cooked.
  3. Add warmed through cooked spaghetti and stir.
  4. Season with salt and pepper, parsley and the juice of one lemon.
  5. Toss together for another minute and serve with lemon halves and picked parsley.
